USCIS's Fraud Detection and National Security Directorate now operates an AI-enhanced system that assists officers in identifying individuals who may pose national security risks or be attempting to obtain immigration benefits through fraud. The inventory discloses that this system supports investigative case prioritization, aids in detecting duplicate case work, and may eventually incorporate predictive modeling to flag suspicious patterns before they are reviewed by a human.
Facial Recognition and Biometric Verification
USCIS has deployed facial recognition technology for identity verification, particularly in the context of employment authorization applications where court orders require adjudication within 30 days. A note on the "human in the loop" claim: DHS consistently states that AI tools do not make final immigration benefit determinations — that humans retain final authority. This is technically true. But it misses the deeper issue. When an algorithm has already sorted your evidence, scored your narrative, and flagged your biometrics before the officer opens your file, the human who then "decides" is making a decision inside an environment that AI has already shaped. The distinction between assistance and automation is not as clean as official statements suggest.

But those systems are in development — not yet operational — and no external audit of facial recognition outcomes has been published.
